THE EXORCIST (1973)
With The Exorcist, William Friedkin (The French Connection, The Boys in The Band) rivals Hitchcock for heart-stopping movies. This deeply horrifying masterpiece led to religious boycotts, fainting and nauseous audiences, and a commercial success that forever changed Hollywood. Linda Blair plays Regan, a 12-year-old girl possessed by the devil. After exhausting all the options of science, psychology, and medicine, Regan's mother (Ellen Burstyn) realizes the supernatural nature of her daughter's condition and resorts religious solution, turning to Father Karras (Jason Miller) for an exorcism. Aided by the mysterious Jesuit exorcist Father Merrin (Max von Sydow), Karras must confront not only supernatural phenomena but also his own inadequate faith and displaced guilt over his mother's recent death, a personal torment Regan uses to manipulate him, but with disturbing results.
The success of The Exorcist led to a new and improved version of this flick, The Exorcist: The Version You've Never Seen (2000). Its soundtrack is digitally remas¬tered and it includes new sound effects and new music, along with never-seen-before restored footage. The result? Just like one of the critics said, "Watching this flick is like going a few rounds with satan himself.....”
A staid American ambassador (Gregory Peck) and his wife are heartbroken when their child is stillborn, but their heartbreak is only beginning when they adopt an orphan. As the boy grows, disaster surrounds him, beginning with the suicide of his nanny, and as the bodies pile up, his horrified father begins to believe that the boy is evil incarnate and must be destroyed.
The unique climax paved the way to the two popular sequels, Damien,- Omen II and Final Conflict : The Omen III. A fourth movie. The Omen IV ; The Awakening, introduced Damien in the form of a beautiful baby girl, Delia. The Omen received two Academy Award Nominations : Best Original Song (“Ave Satani”) and Best Original Score, and won the letter award.
PSYCHO (1960)
Under the supervision of Alfred Hitchock, one of the best horror thriller directors, Psycho invented the genre of the modern horror flicks. Alfred Hitchock’s choreography of elements in Psycho is considered so perfect it inspired a shot-by-shot remake by Gus Van Zant in 1998. However, Hitchocks black-and-white original, featuring Anthony Perkins’s haunting characterization of lonely motel keeper Norman Bates, has never been equaled.
Bates is in charge of an out-of-the-way motel under the domineering spirit of his mother. The young, well-intentioned Bates is introduced to the audience when Marion Crane (Janet Leigh), a blonde on the run with stolen money, checks in for the night. But Momma doesn’t like loose women. So the stage is set for this classical tale of horror - and one of the most famous scenes in film history. Psycho was initially received by audiences with shock and amazement - and it still terrifies today.
